La Tourelle

Commissioned Model

Spring 2016

- Displayed in Fallingwater's Speyer Gallery during the summer of 2016, this model was part of an exhibit on the Kaufmanns' homes before and after Fallingwater. Before commissioning Frank Lloyd Wright to design their famous summer home in the Laurel Highlands, the Kauffmans owned "La Tourelle," a home designed by Benno Janssen in Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania. I volunteered to help create a model of this home for the exhibition. The model is made of basswood with a hardwood platform. Cork (stained and unstained) was used to distinguish the landscape from the hardscape, and to create the hedges. A decent amount of detail was needed to give Janssen's design the respect it deserves.
